Old Bridge is one of Middlesex County's largest municipalities by area and population. The township combines established neighborhoods, major regional shopping and employment corridors, preserved parkland, and a stretch of Raritan Bay shoreline. The municipality was created from South Amboy Township in 1869 as Madison Township and took the name Old Bridge in 1975.

Middlesex County's 71-acre Raritan Bay park includes about 1.3 miles of boardwalk and walkways, beach access, fishing areas, a playground, gazebo and kayak access around Laurence Harbor.

Rail access nearby
Old Bridge has no NJ TRANSIT rail station. Aberdeen-Matawan and other nearby North Jersey Coast Line stations provide rail options outside the township.

History in brief
The area was part of South Amboy Township before a 42-square-mile municipality separated in 1869 as Madison Township. Farming shaped much of the early community, while the postwar building boom transformed the township after 1950. Voters adopted the name Old Bridge in 1975. Along Raritan Bay, the Laurence Harbor waterfront has a long history of fishing, transportation, recreation and shoreline restoration.
